What is the best quality for music files?
I download a lot of music, but I've never really been an "audiophile" as far as the type of files go. Is mp3 the best quality available? what about apple's and window's formats?
Where do I get these "uncompressed" files?
Uncompressed files are on CD's. When you rip a cd, you can rip it as uncompressed WAV if you want.
But nowadays WAV isn't the only CD-quality format; there are compressed formats with the same sound quality as Wav. These are known as "lossless" formats. The most popular is Flac. It uses about 58% as much space as Wav. Microsoft has a lossless format called WMA-Lossless. Apple has one called ALAC.
Compressed lossless formats still use lots of space, so not everyone wants to use them. The next step down is OGG at high bitrates (though your player might not support it, and it might still be too much space for you). Then after that there's AAC, which is pound-for-pound the best (it's true that bitrate matters most, but format partly matters too because different encoders have different definitions of "unimportant" bits). If your player doesn't support AAC then MP3 is the next in line.
