How do you plug skull candy headphones into a computer (read details)?

These are the headphones I have. They are skull candy (see link)
I plugged them into my computer's head phone socket (windows visa home basic) however, they aren't working! Instead of the sound coming out the head phones, it is still coming from the speakers.
Do I have to go into the start up menu and change anything?
I had the speakers plugged in too when I plugged the head phones in. I have tried fiddling with the sound adjustment a few months ago, however I somehow stopped the speakers from working too! so i don't want to do that again.

Is there only one HP jack on your comp? I don't use speakers and i tried plugging it into the back and it wouldn't work.. then i tried the front jack.. it worked
Try unplugging the speakers aswell
