Recording from mini-cassette to computer with USB to 1/8" headphone plug?
I'm trying to record audio from a handheld microcassette recorder to my computer. Here is the set up that I would be using. Can anyone tell me if it would work?
I have an Olympus S711BLUE Microcassette Voice Recorder (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005T3VT/ref=asc_df_B00005T3VT994674?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googlecom09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B00005T3VT) which uses mini-cassettes and a 1/8" headphone input.
The recording program I'm using is Audacity.
The piece I'm missing is the connection from the recorder to my computer. Would I be able to use this device for recording? http://www.amazon.com/Retractable-8-inch-Headphone-Shuffle-Transfer/dp/B000MSFFAK
Would it be compatible? And if not, can you suggest a connection device that would work for my purposes?
The USB to headphone connector won't work. It's just for the iPod Shuffle, which uses its USB port for both data and audio. But the computer sees it as just a data port, so it can't hear the audio.
What you need is an audio cable to go from the headphone port in the Olympus to the 'Line In' on the computer. Generally this is a cable with a headphone plug on one end to plug into the headphone jack on the Olympus, and on the other end whatever kind of connector you need to go into the Line In of your computer (Usually a headphone plug).
If you have the computer's sound hardware set right, you'll be able to hear the output of the Olympus through the computer speakers, and you might have to adjust the volume on the Olympus to get the clearest signal. Then you can go ahead and record.
