how do I connect a stereo amplifier and a 2.1 speaker system?
I purchased 2 studio lab SLB sats 02 (100watts 8 ohms) & 1 center 02 speakers(150watts 6 ohms) and realised I didnt know how to connect them to my stereo speaker system that only has 2 speaker connections, an old Pioneer SA301 160watts 50/60Hz and 8-16ohms. I would be really grateful to hear from someone less ignorant than I am !
The only way that I can think of is mixed mono.
Meaning hook up your left and right speakers as normal, then hook the positive of the center speaker to one of the (Right/Left) speaker positives, and the negative to the other side (R/L) opposite terminal. Basically you are running the center speaker using one terminal from each side of your amp.
Word of caution....If you have 8 ohm speakers and you do this, your center speaker will be running at about 5 ohms impedance. Meaning it may cause a high or excessive current issue with your amplifier.
Some amps can handle this, but usually this is done with high end and mobile audio equipment. Besides the risk of damage to your nice new speakers and the amp, you will not be getting the proper effect and staging of owning the 2.1 system.
If you can, save up some cash and get a home theater receiver, or amp. That way you can add more satellite speakers later and not have to wonder how to hook them up. Check out ebay for some killer deals on audio equipment.
